Letter to the Representative Concerning my Health Issue

Senator Peters,
I’m writing as a favor to my fellow citizens to make you aware of a
situation that has put us all in a very vulnerable position. In the past
few years some freedoms of choice that we once had were taken from
Marylanders leaving us with two alternatives: 1.) Do without, or 2.) Leave
the state - for complimentary health care modalities that could heal
disease and promote wellness.
Recently I developed a medical problem and my family doctor has me
in a process of elimination with him sending me to one specialist after
another until we can get a conclusive diagnosis. After the first visit with
him I knew I would approach this situation as I always did – from both
extremes – trusting the guidance and advice of the allopathic doctors that
he sent me to and getting my body back into balance and receptivity for
healing through a complimentary holistic practitioner.
I knew my Ayruvedic doctor had left the
state. But I had no idea how hard it
would be to find another! In my search to replace my original Ayruvedic doctor I discovered that IT IS NOW ILLEGAL for any of
them (and many other complimentary care providers) TO PRACTICE IN MARYLAND. No wonder my doctor
left. No wonder I couldn’t find one here.
I’ve made an appointment for January with an Ayruvedic
doctor in California, purchased airline tickets, and registered at a hotel
for a week while under doctor’s care because I understand the value of
applying complimentary methods of healthcare along with allopathic
practices. I am determined to nip whatever this is in the bud and I am
lucky enough to be able fund my own journey into wellness.
But isn’t it sad that with healthcare being THE MAJOR CONCERN that
it is for our citizens that Marylanders can’t access resources like Ayruveda or Homeopathy. Modalities that have the power
not only to help heal but also teach and support the practice of healthy
lifestyles and vitality as a way of our being in the world.
Our citizens deserve as many options as possible in
their quest for health. And our communities deserve the benefits of having
those practitioners running business here - filling empty offices, offering
jobs, paying taxes, and luring visitors to Maryland as I was conjured into
a trip to California.
Senator Peters, last year the bills HB730 and HB1380
which would allow these practitioners to do business in MD did not pass.
You would be rendering a valuable service to your constituents and giving
the power to choose a path of health and wellness back to the people by
introducing a bill similar to HB730 or HB1380 – whichever would have the best
chance of passing – and finding a HGO and
EHEA committee member to sponsor or co-sponsor it in the 2010 session. Thank you for your consideration.
Warm regards,
Dottie H.
